Predicting phase equilibria in polydisperse systems

چکیده
Many materials containing colloids or polymers are polydisperse: they comprise particles with properties (such as particle diameter, charge, or polymer chain length) that depend continuously on one or several parameters. This review focuses on the theoretical prediction of phase equilibria in polydisperse systems; the presence of an effectively infinite number of distinguishable particle species makes this a highly non-trivial task. I first describe qualitatively some of the novel features of polydisperse phase behaviour, and outline a theoretical framework within which they can be explored. Current techniques for predicting polydisperse phase equilibria are then reviewed. I also discuss applications to some simple model systems including homopolymers and random copolymers, spherical colloids and colloid–polymer mixtures, and liquid crystals formed from rodand plate-like colloidal particles; the results surveyed give an idea of the rich phenomenology of polydisperse phase behaviour. Extensions to the study of polydispersity effects on interfacial behaviour and phase separation kinetics are outlined briefly.

Modeling of liquid–liquid equilibria of aqueous alcohol + salt systems using amodified NRTL
The modified NRTL (m-NRTL) model is used to represent the excess Gibbs free energy of aqueous (alcohol + electrolyte) solutions. In this work, the m-NRTL model previously developed for representation of vapor-liquid equilibria for (polymer + salt + water) systems has been extended to represent liquid-liquid equilibria of (alcohol + salt + water) systems. The proposed extension is a modified of ...
متن کاملPrediction of Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Using CEOS /GE Models
The present study investigates the use of different GE mixing rules in cubic equations of state for prediction of phase behavior of multicomponent hydrocarbon systems. To predict VLE data in multicomponent symmetric and asymmetric mixtures such as systems that contain light gases (nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.) and heavy hydrocarbons, the SRK equation of state has been combined with excess Gib...
متن کاملPhase Equilibria of Polydisperse Colloids
A set of colloidal particles (be they sterically-or charge-stabilized) can never be made truly identical. They are polydisperse in their sizes (or charges), and their interactions are a function of that property. A truly polydisperse system in the thermodynamic limit contains innnitely many species. Therefore, calculations of phase equilibria involve innnitely many coexistence constraints (a di...
متن کاملExperimental and Theoretical Study of Phase Equilibria in Aqueous Mixtures of Lactic Acid with Benzyl Alcohol and p-Xylene at Various Temperatures
Liquid-liquid equilibria for the (water + lactic acid + benzyl alcohol or p-xylene) ternary systems were investigated at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range from 298.15-318.15 K. The studied systems exhibit two types of liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) behavior. The system consisting of benzyl alcohol displays type-1 LLE behavior, while a type-2 behavior is exhibited by th...
متن کاملPolymer Gel-Liquid Equilibria Using Uniface-FV
Based on Gibbs-Duhem law and using UNIFAC-FV computer algorithm, the activity of polymer component in polymer-solvent systems is determined. The variation of activity of components with concentration at different temperatures are used to find the equilibrium concentration, UCST, and LCST for the systems. Also by generalization of the method, Gel-Liquid equilibrium is studied in some three c...
